Nelson-Wiggen
Piano Company was founded in 1922 by two mechanical engineers
that designed most of the J. P. Seeburg Piano Company line of
products. Their Style 4X Orchestrion came unto the market
in time for the booming early 1920's. The 4X, like
all Nelson-Wiggen's products, was promoted for its high quality
and modern styling, featuring clear glass fronts and fine walnut
veneered cabinets for the more sophisticated settings. A new
series of music rolls were introduced for use on this and similar
instruments, the 4X roll. The
new roll format was based on the standard "G" music roll but
specially arranged for single-stroke xylophones with series of
single-punched perforations instead of elongated slots to operate
the extra instrument.
The
4X features a piano with mandolin attachment, a 28-note xylophone,
snare drum, and triangle. This instrument was restored by
David Ramey, Sr. (and Company) in 2002. The
missing piano was replaced with a new identical piano made for
the Ramey Banjo-Orchestra. New art glass based on a
similar original design is included, as well as the
original clear glass.
Three re-cut Style 4X or G music rolls are included (more
are available).
